From Highway 395 in Lone Pine, CA, travel west on Whitney Portal Road. The Mt. Whitney trailhead is located approximately 13 miles from Lone Pine on the north side of the road. Limited parking is available at the trailhead.
Jul 22, 2021 · The Whitney trail is well maintained and clearly visible in most parts (in July with no snow). It was still useful to have an offline map for a few spots where we were unsure what was trail and what wasn’t. It is also a smart emergency backup item to have in case something does go wrong.
Mount Whitney, of the California Sierra Nevada, holds numerous distinctions. It is the highpoint of both Tulare & Inyo counties. It is the highest peak in the Sierra, & indeed in all of California. Finally, it rises higher than any piece of land in the United States outside of Alaska.

Inyo National Forest is home to any & all backpacking trips in the John Muir Wilderness area, the Mt. Whitney Zone, Mt. Langley and just about all surrounding areas that take off westward from the Lone Pine area.
Although challenging, the ascent up Whitney is an unforgettable experience and the rewards are a panoramic, jaw-dropping view that stretches as far as the eye can see, as well as the joy of having achieved a true hiking milestone. As far as trails go in the lower 48, this is one for the books!
