The Carmel Mission became the main headquarters of the California Missions in 1973. It was reportedly Father Serra’s favorite mission in part because of its location near the Spanish capital of California in Monterey. Father Serra died at the Carmel Mission of tuberculosis in 1784 at the age of 70.
