    Qualifying for the tournament as the host, Japan is the lowest-ranked squad from the FIBA men's rankings among the final 12. This is their first participation in Olympic men's basketball since 1976, when they went winless and finished 11th of 12. The team is coming off a winless 0-5 record in the 2019 FIBA World Cup.
