Niklot or Nyklot (1090 – August 1160) was a chief or prince of the Slavic Obotrites and an ancestor of the House of Mecklenburg. He became chief of the Obotrite confederacy, including the Kissini and the Circipani , between the years 1130 and 1131.
Origins. While the origins of Mecklenburg-Strelitz go back to 1701 the House of Mecklenburg itself is one of the oldest royal houses in Europe. It is also unique among the German princely families in that it is of Slavic origins being descended from Niklot the Prince of the Obotrites.
The full title of Niklot, ancestor of the House of Mecklenburg, was Prince of the Obotrites, Chizzini and Circipani, Lord of Schwerin; however these titles and territories were all lost following his defeat and death in 1160 to the forces of Duke Heinrich III & XII ‘the Lion’ of Saxony and Bavaria.
Living conditions in early Mecklenburg were harsh, inconceivably so to people of the mid-twentieth century. The isolation of each family, the tiny homesites buried in almost unbroken seas of forest, helped to mold a self-reliant and sturdy people. Hardship and scarcity were their intimate companions.

The House of Mecklenburg is a North German dynasty of West Slavic origin that ruled until 1918. If their history is counted since Niklot's inauguration in 1129, they ruled for almost eight centuries. There are no records, if and how Niklot descended from earlier Obotrite rulers. Nevertheless they were among the longest ruling families of Europe.
