I’m a North Carolina native who lives in California. It depends on what you’re into but I highly recommend Chapel Hill/Durham/Orange County, Charlotte and the mountains, whether a larger city like Asheville or a smaller community like Blowing Rock.

- Asheville. Step into a world where creativity reigns supreme. Asheville is the artistic heartbeat of North Carolina, a city that thrives on self-expression.
- Cary. Welcome to the future, where technology and community coalesce. Cary is a tech-savvy town that’s part of the Research Triangle, making it one of the best areas to live in North Carolina for those in STEM fields.
- Chapel Hill. Step into a realm where intellect and culture are the stars of the show. Chapel Hill, home to the University of North Carolina, is a cerebral haven that’s also one of the best cities to live in North Carolina.
- Pro: Cost of Living. One of the pros of living in North Carolina is that the cost of living here tends to be lower, particularly when compared to the northeast or western parts of the country.
- Con and Pro: Tax. North Carolina ranks near the lower one-third of states on the relative size of taxes and while most taxes are below the national average it is still high.
- Pro: The Food And Drink. If yOu are relocating to North Carolina you are in for a treat. North Carolina’s restaurant scene is truly exceptional, offering a culinary experience that is second to none.
- Con: The School System. While North Carolina boasts some of the most prestigious universities and colleges in the United States, its K-12 education system is considered average compared to other states.
- The food in Wilmington is incredible. Life in Wilmington involves being on the water as much as possible. That means you’re going to have plenty of culinary options that involve fresh seafood as well.
- Wilmington is a dog-friendly city. If you are going to be living in Wilmington with your dog, then you will find the city to be a warm and welcoming place.
- There are plenty of ways to meet people when living here. The people who live in Wilmington are typically warm and inviting in a genuine way. You won’t find the false pretentiousness of “keeping with tradition” like you can in other parts of the south.
- The housing market is surprisingly affordable in Wilmington. When you hear people complaining about the cost of housing in Wilmington, they are comparing what the average price is in the city compared to what it is in the rest of the state.
I love North Carolina but would prefer living in a quiet, rural community rather than the Triangle area. All I see are beautiful trees and woods being torn down to make way for new subdivisions. If some of the property on Lake Wheeler Road wasn’t owned by NCSU, there would be houses all over it.
