Aug 17, 2016 · It’s called “Faro a Colon”, which is Spanish for “Columbus Lighthouse”, so named because of its powerful lighting system consisting up nearly 150 searchlight beams that project a gigantic cross in the sky. The beams are so powerful that they can be seen as far away as Puerto Rico.
Faro a Colón, also known by its English name as the Columbus Lighthouse, is a monument and also the final resting place of the Italian explorer Christopher Columbus, located in Santo Domingo Este Municipality, in the Dominican Republic.
Why? There is a nice marble statue in the center of the lighthouse (I'm not sure why its called a lighthouse, it looks more like a mausoleum than a lighthouse), and there is some artwork depicting Christopher Columbus, but other than that it’s a bunch of displays from countries.
