Historically, both zed and zee were used pretty much interchangeably in both British and American English, alongside a whole host of other more outlandish names for the last (or rather, second last) letter of the alphabet, like izzard, uzzard, zad, shard and, our personal favourite, ezod.
The pronunciation “zee” is older than the alphabet song by a century or two, but was done in an attempt to bring the pronunciation of “z” in line with the pattern followed by much of the rest of the alphabet.
It appears that the letter "z" had numerous pronunciations in the British Isles and (what is now) the United States. Shakespeare pronounces it "zed" in King Lear. "Zed" is derived from the "zeta" in Greek. Another variation was "izzard" likely derived from "ézed" which was the French version of "zeta". Numerous other variants exist as well.
May 28, 2024 · Letter <z> originally appeared after Letter <f>, but was removed by the Romans as they didn’t have much use for it. it was reintroduced hundreds of years later and plonked at the end of the alphabet; where it still appears today.
