  2. Dec 27, 2017 · The celebrated stage and screen actor, writer and director died on Aug. 13 at the City of Hope Hospital in Duarte, California, after a three-year battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 82.

    • ROSE MARIE. Marie, known best for her portrayal of television writer Sally Rogers on the beloved CBS sitcom The Dick Van Dyke Show, has died at age 94, according to her official website.
    • ALFIE CURTIS. One year after the death of Carrie Fisher, another member of the Star Wars family has passed away. Alfie Curtis, who played Dr. Evazan in Star Wars: A New Hope, died at the age of 87, according to reports in December.
    • JIM NABORS. Nabors, who portrayed the jovial Gomer Pyle on The Andy Griffith Show before branching out with his own series, died on Nov. 30 at his home in Hawaii.
    • JULIO OSCAR MECHOSO. Mechoso, known for his lengthy career in both television and film, died in late November at the age of 62. Mechoso died of a heart attack on Saturday, according to the Miami Herald, which was first to report the news.
    • Gene Cernan. Gene Cernan, 82, the last astronaut to walk on the moon who returned to Earth with a message of "peace and hope for all mankind," died on Jan.
    • John Hurt. John Hurt, 77, the acclaimed prolific English actor of stage and screen whose credits included "Midnight Express," "The Elephant Man" and "Alien," died on Jan.
    • Mary Tyler Moore. Mary Tyler Moore, 80, the pop culture icon who co-starred on "The Dick Van Dyke Show" and became a torchbearer for women with "The Mary Tyler Moore Show," died on Jan.
    • Richard Hatch. Richard Hatch, 71, star of the original science fiction cult series "Battlestar Galactica" and its Syfy remake, died on Feb. 7.

    • Heather Menzies-Urich. Actress Heather Menzies-Urich, best known for portraying Louisa von Trapp in the 1965 film “The Sound of Music,” died at the age of 68.
    • Martin Landau. Oscar-winning actor Martin Landau, most closely associated with scene-stealing character turns in such films as “North by Northwest,” “Crimes and Misdemeanors” and “Ed Wood” as well as the classic TV series “Mission: Impossible,” died at the age of 89.
