Jun 10, 2021 · Soldiers of the 3rd Armored Division on the roll in Europe in late 1944. The “Third Herd,” as it was affectionately known, often found itself leading the charge across Europe, thereby earning itself another nickname: The Spearhead.
The 3rd Armored Division held a four-day celebration in early April, 1957 to commemorate the division's 16th Anniversary. The opening ceremonies were held at Campo Pond in Hanau and were attended by an estimated 6,000 visitors.
The 3d Armored Division established its presence on Kasernes in Frankfurt, Hanau, Gelnhausen, Budingen, Friedberg, Butzbach, and Kirch Göns. These locations placed the Spearhead Division astride the Fulda Gap, an ancient invasion route into central Europe.

The 3rd Armored Division first entered the camp complex at an accidentally bombed and ruined barracks overflowing with corpses, called the Boelcke Kaserne.
April 1941 to January 1942. Lieutenant General Alvan Cullom Gillem Jr., was the first commander of the 3d Armored Division. General Gillem was a veteran of WWI. In 1940, he was the commander of the 66th Infantry (Light Tanks).
The 3d Armored Division landed in Normandy and entered combat 29 June 1944, taking part in the hedgerow fighting. The Division broke out at Marigny and with the 1st Infantry Division swung south to Mayenne in a general exploitation of the St. Lo break-through.
