The Aaron Copland School of Music is one of the oldest departments at Queens College, founded when the College opened in 1937. The department's curriculum was originally established by Edwin Stringham, and a later emphasis on the analytical system of Heinrich Schenker was initiated by Saul Novack.

This program (coordinated with the Queens College School of Education) provides a solid, structured musical education and a firm foundation in music pedagogy for students preparing to teach in public or private schools.

Undergraduate Concentration in Composition. The composition concentration is intended to aid undergraduate students who have shown commitment and attained a level of skill in music composition in improving their skills and widening their knowledge of contemporary techniques and practices.
