Schlesinger was born in New York City on October 31, 1967, [3] the son of publicist Barbara (née Bernthal) and Stephen Schlesinger. [4] . He was a cousin of actor Jon Bernthal [5] and the grandson of musician Murray Bernthal (1911–2010). [6] .
