McKibbon was credited with interesting Tjader in Latin music while he played in Shearing's group. In 1999, the first album in his own name, Tumbao Para Los Congueros De Mi Vida, was released. McKibbon's second album, Black Orchid, was released in 2004.

He makes “Black Orchid” sound dark and mysterious; His version of “Little Niles” is joyous and masterful. “Ode to Billie Joe” is touching in its elegiac manner.

May 12, 2004 · Love the latest CD (as well as the first one). The instrumentation is intriguing, combining guitar, concertina, congas, flute, sax, piano, bass and drums. The featured sax and flute player on this and McKibbon's first CD, which, incidentally, was grammy nominated, is the great Justo Almario.
