He was the prominent leader and chairman of the Chicago, Illinois, chapter of the Black Panther Party. Their “Power to the People” philosophy led Fred to founding the Rainbow Coalition, a multicultural alliance among major street gangs to help put an end to infighting and work for social change.

Fredrick "Chairman Fred" Allen Hampton Sr. (August 30, 1948 – December 4, 1969) was an American activist. He came to prominence in his late teens and very early 20s in Chicago as deputy chairman of the national Black Panther Party and chair of the Illinois chapter.
