Memorial, after refurbishment in 2007. The memorial was refurbished in 2007 and rededicated in time for Anzac Day (25 April). The pavement was altered to incorporate a larger five pointed star motif as used in the flag of Turkey, to match the existing wall in the form of the crescent moon.
The crescent-shaped wall was inspired by the symbol of the crescent and five-pointed star on the Turkish flag. Located on the wall is a bronze likeness of Ataturk, a gift from the Turkish Government. Click here to learn more about Anzac Parade and its memorials.

Every year, after ANZAC Day and Remembrance Day, the Department of Veterans’ Affairs receives many letters asking about The Ode. The issue raised by most letters is whether the last word of the second line should be ‘condemn’ or ‘contemn’. Contemn means to ‘despise or treat with disregard’, so both words fit the context.
Apr 28, 2016 · Mustapha Kemal went on to become the founding President of the modern Turkish Republic in 1923, ruling the country until his death in 1938. He delivered the ANZAC Memorial in 1934. His words are inscribed on the memorial at ANZAC Cove, and also on the Atatürk memorial in Wellington, New Zealand, which I visited for the first time this January.
