In its broadest sense the term “apocalyptic” is applied to parts of the writings of the OT prophets—specifically to passages in Joel, Amos, Zechariah, and Daniel—as well as to portions of the NT (e.g. the Olivet Discourse, 1 Thess 4:13 ff., and the Revelation).

Compared to relatively straightforward narrative texts of biblical literature, apocalyptic literature has an unfamiliar feel for many readers. Some regard it as written in a code language whose decipherment and interpretation are anything but obvious, leading to reader confusion and disorientation.
