  1. April 10, 2023. Say you hear or read the words: “You’ve won!” What will you do with your winnings? Who wouldn’t be excited to win a prize, sweepstakes, or lottery? But…did you actually win? And how do you know? Sweepstakes, prize, and lottery frauds are among the top scams people report to the FTC.

    • Scammers say they’re from the government when they’re not. Scammers try to look official. They want you to think you’ve won a government-supervised lottery or sweepstakes.
    • Scammers use names of organizations you might recognize. Scammers might pretend to be from well-known companies that run real sweepstakes. But no real sweepstakes company will contact you to ask for money so you can claim a prize.
    • Scammers send you a message (via text, email, or social media) to get your personal information. You might be told that you won a gift card or a discount code to a local store.
    • Scammers make it seem like you’re the only person who won a prize. But the same text, email, or letter went to lots of people. If your message came by mail, check the postmark on the envelope or postcard.

    • Check how old their URL is.
    • Look them up on all the social media platforms they advertise as being on. Don't just check Facebook. If they say they're on Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn and Google+ then have a look at their profiles on each of them.
    • Look up key personnel and judges on LinkedIn. The organisation should have on their website their key members of staff and their roles, so look them up on LinkedIn.
    • Look them up on Companies house. How long has the organisation been around? Have they built up enough credibility over the long-term to be qualified to give out awards?
