From an outsider’s perspective it seems simple enough, dump some bait in the woods, then shoot the bears as they come rolling in.

- Find Mature Timber. You have to locate three ingredients to get into big bears, Werner says. First, old-growth timber for denning, then food and water.
- Scout it for Sign. Look for big branches broken off trees, claw marks in bark, and rubbed-out bark stubbled with bear hair. Ideally, you’ll also find fresh tracks on the ground measuring 6 inches wide or better.
- Check for Scat. “It comes out green but oxidizes very quickly, turning black almost immediately,” Werner says. “The greener it is inside, the fresher.”
- Focus on Blueberries and Rose Hips. Bears go into a feeding frenzy in early October. Climb a nearby ridge and monitor the food source with binocs or a spotting scope.

Black Bear Hunting – Bear Anatomy. When it comes to hunting black bears, understanding their anatomy is crucial. A well-placed shot ensures a clean, quick kill, minimizing suffering for the bear and tracking efforts for you. The ideal shot placement on a black bear is behind the shoulder, aiming for the vital organs.
- The first challenge is to get a bear to hit your bait. Ensure that the bait is put on, or near, a game trail regularly used by bears. Trail cameras can be used to confirm bears use the trail.
- Smell is the bear’s primary sense and used to locate food. Bruce MacDonald, owner of Olive the Lake Lodge in northeastern Ontario, said bears use the scent of their own feces to locate baits.
- Get in the stand early. Although hunting bears over bait is mainly an afternoon game with the best hunting late in the day, still get in the stand early.
- Always follow the same routine when baiting. For instance, come into the bait bucket, empty it and bang the pail on the bucket on the way out. When you start hunting, follow the same routine but head to the stand instead of the usual route out.
