Feb 28, 2024 · Borrelia burgdorferi is a helical-shaped spirochete that is poorly gram-stained (other spirochetes do not take up Gram stain). The cells stain a weak Gram-negative as safranin is the last dye used, but Borrelia burgdorferi is not classified as either Gram-positive or Gram-negative.
A healthcare provider must estimate the pre-test likelihood that a patient has Lyme disease in order to under stand the positive and negative predictive values of tests for Lyme disease. Fortunately, there are resources available to assist providers in making this judgement.
