Chromosome 22 is one of the 23 pairs of chromosomes in human cells. Humans normally have two copies of chromosome 22 in each cell. Chromosome 22 is the second smallest human chromosome, spanning about 51 million DNA base pairs and representing between 1.5 and 2% of the total DNA in cells.

Dec 1, 1999 · Chromosome 22 is the first of 23 human chromosome pairs to be deciphered because of its relatively small size and its association with several diseases and because of the groundwork of several scientists beginning in the early 1990s.
Both the micrographic and schematic karyograms show the normal human diploid karyotype, which is the typical composition of the genome within a normal cell of the human body, and which contains 22 pairs of autosomal chromosomes and one pair of sex chromosomes (allosomes).
Originally defined as chromosome 22 because earlier cytogenetic analyzes suggested that it was the smallest chromosome in the human genome. Chromosome 21 is now known to be smaller than chromosome 22, by only a few Mb.
