May 10, 2019 · Review: Cleopatra Jones. (1973) When it comes to Blaxploitation cinema, it's my opinion that there are two distinct types of films within the genre. In one camp are the films born out of the exploitation scene of the late sixties and early seventies, produced independently and often gritty, authentic, and occasionally even shocking.
Cleopatra Jones (1973) is a movie I recently watched on HBOMAX. The storyline follows a a US Agent whose missions have upset drug lord "Mommy" and her #1 drug dealer "Doodle Bug." Mommy and Doodle Bug set out to bring down Jones and her war on crime by using their influences on the street and in the police force.

That is why I was a little concerned going into this film. However, those concerns were immediately dispelled. I was captivated by Dobson's coolness and the soundtrack slap. In addition, it doesn't take long for two-time Oscar winner Shelley Winters to emerge on the screen in a role that is equally unhinged as it is funny.
