As you venture through the winding streets of San Francisco, you may happen upon the iconic Coit Tower that has been a part of the city’s landscape for decades. it stands tall at roughly 2200 feet and is made of simple, sleek concrete in a cylinder-like shape.
The interior features fresco murals in the American Social Realism style, painted by 22 different onsite artists and their numerous assistants. Three artists preferred oil on canvas and worked offsite. One artist preferred egg tempera rather than fresco.

May 19, 2024 · COIT TOWER MURALS. On the interior of Coit Tower, you'll find 27 murals painted during the height of the Great Depression. Painted by various local artists, these fresco murals reflect the life of San Franciscans during the 1920s and 1930s, including many of the struggles of the working class.
Guided tours of Coit Tower, including the murals, are led by knowledgeable volunteers and are available for groups of 4 to 6 people. The tours last 30-40 minutes and cover the tower's history, the Public Works of Art Project, and the lives of the 26 artists who created the murals .
