Dan is a co-founder, with philosopher Daniel C. Dennett and scientist Richard Dawkins, of The Clergy Project. Dan married Annie Laurie Gaylor in 1987 at a feminist/freethought ceremony at Freethought Hall in Sauk City, Wisconsin. He has five children, nine grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
