History. Silverstone Circuit was first used for motorsport by an ad hoc group of friends who set up an impromptu race in September 1947. One of their members, Maurice Geoghegan, lived in nearby Silverstone village and was aware that the airfield was deserted.
HISTORY OF THE CIRCUIT. The Silverstone circuit, which was originally an RAF bomber station called RAF Silverstone during World War II, is located on the site of the former airfield. The airfield had three runways arranged in a classic triangular pattern, which now form the outline of the current racing track.
It first came into use after World War Two when the runways where Wellington bombers used to take off were converted for use as a racing circuit. A fast perimeter layout was then adopted, and the pit and paddock for the first race was situated near to what is now Abbey.
