   • Purple Rain was Prince’s sixth studio album and was originally released in June 1984. The previous album, 1999, was issued in 1982, so while by any normal standards this was a fairly prompt follow-up, for Prince it was unusually tardy and 1983 remains the only year in the eighties where he didn’t release a new studio album.
