He introduced fundamental concepts of differential geometry, opening the way for the development of tensor calculus, which would later provide the mathematical basis for general relativity .

He was the third son of Franz Karl Christoffel (1798-1832) and Maria Helena Christoffel (nee Engels) (17951858).

He attended secondary schools from 1844 until 1849. At first he studied at the Jesuit Gymnasium in Cologne but moved to the Friedrich-Wilhelms Gymnasium.
