Elwin Bruno Christoffel. Elwin Bruno Christoffel ( German: [kʁɪˈstɔfl̩]; 10 November 1829 – 15 March 1900) was a German mathematician and physicist. He introduced fundamental concepts of differential geometry, opening the way for the development of tensor calculus, which would later provide the mathematical basis for general relativity .
Aug 1, 1981 · A BIOGRAPHICAL OUTLINE Elwin Bruno Christoffel was born on 10 November 1829 at Montjoie (Monschau since 1918), about 30 kilometers south of the city of Aachen in the westernmost part of Germany, near the Belgian border. He was the third son of Franz Karl Christoffel (1798-1832) and Maria Helena Christoffel (nee Engels) (17951858).

Elwin Bruno Christoffel 1829-1900. Elwin Christoffel attended an elementary school in Montjoie, but then spent a number of years being tutored at home in languages, mathematics and classics. He attended secondary schools from 1844 until 1849. At first he studied at the Jesuit Gymnasium in Cologne but moved to the Friedrich-Wilhelms Gymnasium.
