Amoebiasis merupakan suatu keadaan terdapatnya Entamoeba histolytica dengan atau tanpa manifestasi klinik, dan disebut juga sebagai penyakit bawaan makanan ( Food Diseases ) (Rasmaliah, 2003).
Entamoeba histolytica adalah sejenis parasit golongan protozoa usus, yang sering hidup sebagai mikroorganisme komensal (apatogen) di jaringan usus besar manusia, namun pada kondisi tertentu dapat berubah menjadi patogen dengan cara membentuk koloni di dinding usus dan menembus dinding usus sehingga menimbulkan ulserasi.
Entamoeba histolytica represents one of the leading causes of parasitic death worldwide. Although identified as the causative agent of amebiasis since 1875, the molecular mechanisms by which the parasite causes disease are still not fully understood.
