Nov 3, 2009 · Waves and Ways: Donald Takayama Erik Sommer model. Welcome to Waves and Ways. I am hoping to document my enjoyment for surfing with details about my sessions, anything related to wave riding, Hawaii, and my take on surf culture. Thanks for dropping in.
- Haydenshapes – Midlength Glider. It doesn’t hurt to switch things up now and then and add a shape into the mix that’s both nostalgic and progressive—and, considerably larger than the “normal” HS quiver.
- Channel Islands – CI Mid. The CI Mid is a modern classic design resulting from a fun collaboration with Devon Howard, a southern California surfer that has spent the past two decades riding and refining egg-inspired designs that are in a category of boards many refer to as midlengths.
- Album – Darkness. A nimble, mid-length with a low, fast rocker. The pulled in tail makes it surprisingly maneuverable for its size. A longboard alternative when the waves are small and weak and also goes on good days at long point breaks.
- Pyzel – Mid Length Crisis. Easy paddling, responsive and loose, the Mid Length Crisis has a semi-traditional, wide-point forward outline that is sleek and racey for fast, down-the-line drive, but full bodied enough to provide added stability and glide in weaker, slower waves.

Surf the board from the nose or turn on a dime. Probably one of the fastest mid-length boards out there, now with controlled maneouverability. Donald first came up with this design in the mid 60’s. It has been slightly re-worked and now is basically a smaller version of the Erik Sommer Model.
The Pacific Beach Surf Club has fielded some very competitive surfers over the years, some of whom have gone on to become quite successful in the sport, names such as: Bobby Challenger Thomas, Kevin Connelly, Erik Sommers, Summer Romero, Kassia Meador and Quintin Macklin.
