The two groups combined to form the Force M.D.'s — which stood for "Musical Diversity" — and signed to Tommy Boy Records in 1984. As a quintet, they braided multiple styles — hip-hop, soul, R&B, doo-wop — into an idiosyncratic whole.

The group is most known for the overwhelming commercial success from the Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis-penned classic “Tender Love.”. The song proved to be a huge success, peaking at #2 in the Billboard Hot 100 chart, remaining there for 19 weeks, and helping Jam & Lewis garner a Grammy Award for Producer of the Year.
