He died in a plane crash along with the pilot on Oct. 9, 1970, while conducting a forest fire aerial detection flight.
Forest Ranger Raymond Murray was killed in an airplane crash while taking off from the Pleasant Valley Airfield near Hammondsport, New York. He was conducting an aerial patrol to detect forest fires and violators of state fire laws.

Apr 1, 2024 · In 1950, Raymond Murray was a wildland firefighter and appointed a New York State Forest Ranger in 1951 for the agency we know today as the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC). In his spare time, he raised pheasants, ran a shooting preserve, and owned and operated the Empire Theater, which eventually became the Empire Steakhouse.
