Nov 14, 2018 · Last week, I interviewed Gavin Grant at his minimalist home in North Oakland. Grant is a conceptual wood sculptor. I hadn’t met any black wood sculptors—let alone one in a Living Legends T-shirt. Turns out Grant has been honing his craft in the Bay Area for almost two decades.

Mar 1, 2019 · Gavin Grant didn’t set out to be a wood sculptor. In college, he signed up as a teacher’s assistant in a wood shop class—just to earn a few credits so he could graduate. And then he fell in love with the smell of sawdust. Almost two decades later, he’s been carving up things ever since.

Using bendable plywood as his primary medium, Gavin’s work is a visual representation of harmony, the patterns in his work demonstrate the tension between chaos and order. His sculptural pieces feature curved lines that symbolize movement, freedom and fluidity, contrasted with straight lines that represent order and precision.

Link is a graduate of Columbia University in New York and the MFA program of UNC Greensboro. In 1995, she attended the Clarion East Writing Workshop . Link and husband Gavin Grant manage Small Beer Press, based in Northampton, Massachusetts.
