He attended university at Texas A&M, where he began his competitive rodeo career. Soon after graduating, he became a team roper of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA).
In February 2012, Strait became a grandfather when George Strait Jr. and his wife Tamara had their first child, a son, George Harvey Strait III.
