Though his striking feature debut can be a bit slow-moving, it fascinatingly blurs the line between fantasy and reality, from the eerie intro all the way through to a surprise finale that raises goosebumps.

Sep 13, 2017 · Overall “Gutland” is a successful debut full-length from Van Maele. Needless to say, the film is nothing special in hindsight. Yes, the final act is quite the twist; however, Gutland offers a standard psychological noir that deservingly draws praise for audacity but makes almost no sense the whole way.

The premise of the film seems quite fantastical, although the director always plays with the perception of reality.
