Following Houdini's death in 1926, Bess struggled with money, alcohol, and was the target of unethical spiritualists and journalists out to exploit her. She twice attempted suicide. In 1930 Bess met Edward Saint who became her companion and manager (and some say secret husband).
Bess was initially courted by Dash, but she and Houdini married, with Bess replacing Dash in the act, which became known as "The Houdinis". Houdini's big break came in 1899 when he met manager Martin Beck in St. Paul, Minnesota.
