Dec 1, 2021 · Hole in the Ground is a spectacular bowl-shaped volcanic crater located on the western edge of the Fort Rock Basin and at the southern margin of lavas from Newberry Volcano. In maximum dimension, the crater is a mile across, with a depth of over 500 feet.
From Bend, Oregon take highway 97 south for 28 miles. Pass La Pine and then turn left onto highway 31. After 21.6 miles you will see a sign to Hole in the Ground. Take a left onto a gravel road. Stay on the main road and follow the signs to the destination which is on the west rim of the hole.

At milepost 22, follow a “Hole in the Ground” pointer left onto gravel Breakup Road 3125 for 3 miles. Then fork right onto washboard gravel Road 3130 for 1.2 miles to a powerline, and turn left on bumpy Road 200 for 0.2 mile to the crater rim (GPS location 43.4128, -121.2053).
Jan 17, 2010 · From U.S. 97, go south through the town of La Pine and head east (left) on state Highway 31 about 22 miles, then look for signs for Hole in the Ground.
There are two big holes along Highway 31 in Central Oregon: Big Hole and Hole-in-the-Ground. Both are maars, or craters left behind by volcanic steam explosions. If you've only got time to see one maar on your drive across the state, choose Hole-in-the-Ground. It's located just a few miles off the main road.
