Have you ever dated someone that seems like your perfect match? A person all your friends swoon over and make jealous remarks about? Everything about this person seems to fit you; but deep down, underneath the attractive face and charming personality, something just feels off. This embodies my Hot Shots Golf: World Invitational experience.
The Hot Shots Golf series has enthralled plenty of gamers over the years. Its mission: make golf as approachable as possible while preserving the sport's unique challenge. Hot Shots Golf employs colorful, cheery characters, relaxing music, and an overall upbeat attitude. World Invitational marks the franchise's debut on the PlayStation Vita. And though it continues the incredible traditions that have made it so popular (and showcases a few sleek additions), it also frustrates on a number of levels and provides little reward for a lot of effort.
The structure of Hot Shots Golf: World Invitational echoes the setup of past games. Single-player challenges get served up in different leagues of play. Leagues contain a series of tournaments and end with a versus match against a rival golfer. This rival can then enter your collection of playable golfers after you win the showdown.
Hot Shots Golf: World Invitational has a nice, colorful approach to golf and a respectable set of multiplayer options. But the disconnect between the amount of time required to plan a shot and the milliseconds needed to mess it all up sparks ample frustrations.
Wasting 30 minutes of your time with no failsafe mechanic built-in seems harsh for a game that claims to make golf more palatable to non-golfers. And overcoming difficult courses provides much less reward than the time investment deserves.
Even though Hot Shots has charmed plenty of gamers like me, I don’t think this relationship will work.
