At just under a mile, you see the first major site: the famous House on Fire. This well-preserved site consists of five granaries built into Cedar Mesa sandstone. The overhang that forms the ceiling has a unique, streaked pattern that resembles flames at certain times of the day.

The most important thing is to be here at the right time. The perception of ‘fire’ is the result of sunlight reflecting off of the wall on the opposite side of the wash. This reflected light only...The second prerequisite is that the weather has to be clear. If clouds are obstructing the sun, you will lose the reflected light which is critical for the shot.The closest town is Blanding which has a couple of hotels. The next nearest town is Mexican Hat, about 40 miles away.House on Fire is located just off of UT 95 about halfway between Blanding and Natural Bridges National Monument on County Road 263.One you are standing there, the best spot should be obvious. There are a number of structures wedged under the ledge but just look at the roof. On a full frame camera, I needed 20mm to do the job.Exposure bracketing/HDR is useful here to fully capture the highlights and shadows. Especially if you try to include the sky in your shot but I think the shot is best with it excluded.There are two arms of Mule Canyon, and both contain ruins every half to 1 mile or so. This adventure covers just a part of South Mule Canyon, which has some very picturesque ruins. One of the most famous of the Cedar Mesa Puebloan ruins is commonly called the “House on Fire” ruin.

Nov 30, 2020 · Easy trail through the Mule Canyon wash to a nicely preserved ruin. Didn’t make it here at the optimal time (10-11 am) for perfect sun exposure, but still got some good photos. Well worth it for minimal effort. Trailhead isn’t far off hwy 95 on graded dirt road.

Approximate hiking time – 2 to 2.5 hours for House on Fire, 8 hours for the entire canyon. Elevation at Trailhead – 5961 feet. Elevation at House on Fire – 5993 feet. Difficulty – Easy.
