Unlike other brass instruments with valves, the trombone achieves different pitches by lengthening or shortening the tubing. The slide is made up of two parallel tubes that move in and out of each other, allowing the player to change the instrument’s overall length.
Trombones work by using the slide to change the length of the tubing, which controls the pitch of the sound. The slide has seven positions, counted in order from the 1st position (toward you) to the 7th position (fully extended). However, there are no position markers on the tubing. Trombone players learn the positions by feel.
