In the early 2000s the National Association of Counties recognized 3,066 U.S. counties. All states except Connecticut and Rhode Island have functioning county governments.
Counties are usually governed by an elected body, variously called the county commission, board of supervisors, commissioners' court, county council, county court, or county legislature.

Ch. 7, the legislature has divided the state into 67 counties whose boundaries are defined severally in the subsections of Ch. 7.
