This chapter discusses the evidence for the existence of an intermediate subgroup Proto-Italo-Celtic, the parent of Proto-Italic and Proto-Celtic. The chapter also examines the connections between Italic and Celtic and the other northwest Indo-European subgroups.
The first one discusses the reality of an Italo-Celtic subgroup within the Indo-European language family, concluding that there is enough evidence to assume a genuine but short-lived subgroup.
Phrygian provides in several respects the missing link between Greek and Armenian. In particular, the paradigms of the middle voice appear to have been more extensive than what we find in the separate languages. The archaic character of the Phrygian language is corroborated by the Indo-Iranian and Italo-Celtic evidence.
The traditional interpretation of the data is that both sub-groups of the Indo-European language family are generally more closely related to each other than to the other Indo-European languages.
