Map of the location of ꞌOrongo on Easter Island. Orongo (Rapa Nui: Oroŋo) is a stone village and ceremonial center at the southwestern tip of Rapa Nui (Easter Island). It consists of a collection of low, sod-covered, windowless, round-walled buildings with even lower doors positioned on the high south-westerly tip of the large volcanic caldera called Rano Kau.
This moai, 2.5 meters high, is unique not only because it was made in basalt, the hardest raw material available, but also because it represents the continuity and change that was happening in the ancient culture of Rapa Nui. This moai created a crucial connection between the ancient cult of the ancestors and the new cult of the bird-man.
Apr 25, 2024 · The Rapa Nui island was formed by 3 volcanoes, each at a point of the island. All of them are now extinct but they define the different points of this island shaped as a triangle. One of these volcanoes, Rano Kao, is now a crater and is filled with fresh water, which was used by the indigenous Rapa Nui people.
It is perched on a narrow ridge, with the crater of the Rano Kau volcano on one side and cliffs that fall 300 meters to the sea on the other, and contains dozens of petroglyphs and stone houses dating from the Huri-Moai period (ca. 1680–1867) of Easter Island’s history.

Orongo is a stone settlement and seasonal ceremonial centre, built by the indigenous Rapa Nui people on the edge of the Rano Kau Volcano caldera, located on the southwestern tip of Easter Island.
The first houses of Orongo seem to have been built in 1400AD, well before the Tangata Manu began, there is also the remains of a small Ahu which is unrelated to what Orongo village came to be. The Orongo Village was built up over time to have 53 Hare (houses) which are formed in three different sets, all facing the ocean.
