Is this based on a true story? Yes. In August, 1831, a group of slaves, led by lay preacher Nat Turner, rose up in rebellion in Southampton County Virginia. Over the next couple of days they killed about 50-60 whites, before being stopped by a large militia force. About 50 slaves, including Turner himself, we're formally executed.
