The whole idea of edgy, grim-dark group being led by a painfully Mary Sue Captain on a mission that only someone who is willing to bend the law can complete is pure nonsense in a Star trek context.

There's a sequel/follow up called Renegades: Requiem that omits all references to Star Trek in an attempt to get around CBS's limitations on Star Trek fan films -- it's not awful as fan films go. It does, however, illustrate the power of a good actor, because Robert Beltran brings so much gravitas and strength to the show just by being there.
