The Singapore Botanic Gardens (the Gardens) was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site on 4th July 2015, at the 39th session of the World Heritage Committee (WHC) in Bonn, Germany. The Gardens is the first and only tropical botanic garden on the UNESCO’s World Heritage List.
The UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) has designated 45 World Heritage Sites in nine countries (also called "State parties") of Southeast Asia: Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.
To be included on the World Heritage List, sites must be of Outstanding Universal Value and meet at least one out of ten selection criteria. In December 2012, Singapore placed the Singapore Botanic Gardens on its Tentative List, indicating interest to inscribe it as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
