Nov 20, 2023 · Arroyo Burro Beach (Hendry's Beach) is a dog-friendly, off-leash beach in City of Santa Barbara is the beach that runs below the Douglas Family Preserve. The area begins east of the slough at Arroyo Burro Beach (the locals call it Hendry's Beach), and stretches almost to the steps at Mesa Lane.
This beach is frequently visited by dog owners because dogs are permitted to venture both inside the water and on the beach! Arroyo Burro Beach welcomes all dogs with open paws, as long as you keep your pup on leash while on the main beach. They’re allowed to cool off and enjoy splashing in the waves with you if they're up for a swim!
It is also a popular dog beach, where four-legged friends are allowed year-round. Although dogs must be leashed at all times while at Arroyo Burro (and all County Parks), dogs can be off-leash east of a small creek that’s just a couple minutes walk down the beach.

Arroyo Burro Beach — also called Hendry’s Beach — is the only beach in Santa Barbara that allows dogs off-leash in select locations. Let your pooch play in the sand and chase some waves at this Santa Barbara classic. The Douglas Family Preserve is a large, expansive area named for actor Kirk Douglas.
Like Douglas Family Preserve, Arroyo Burro Beach is also dog friendly. While dogs must always be leashed on the beach, your four-legged friends can swim, take walks along the bluffs, or get a bath at one of the beach’s self-serve washing stations.
