Tron's central theme was "legacy". The father / son, the creator / creation, the mentor / apprentice, etc.. I also think there are some interesting parallels between the story and religious mythos, for example Flynn = God, Clu = Satan, Quorra = human with free will.
I saw Tron Legacy this afternoon, and at first I considered it to be a good popcorn movie. Cool fights, okay story, Jeff Bridges looks creepy in CG. Then I got mythed by my coworker who explained to me that the story is basically a digital retelling of the War in Heaven, and that the original Tron was also included multiple religious overtones.
