The Center for UFO Studies (CUFOS) is a privately funded UFO research group. The group was founded in 1973 by J. Allen Hynek, who at the time was chair of the Department of Astronomy at Northwestern University in Illinois.

Hynek was the founder and first head of the Center for UFO Studies (CUFOS). Founded in 1973 in Evanston, Illinois (but now based in Chicago), CUFOS advocates for scientific analysis of UFO cases.
Through the 1960s Hynek was the chief consultant for the air force UFO project known as Blue Book, but later turned his attention to nurturing scholarly enthusiasm for the study of strange flying objects. CUFOS grew through the 1970s and had its peak years toward the end of the decade.
