James Edward Ryan (born September 21, 1966) is an American lawyer and professor. Since 2018, he has served as the ninth president of the University of Virginia. He previously served as the eleventh dean of the Harvard Graduate School of Education from 2013 to 2018.
A leading expert on law and education, James Ryan has written extensively about how law structures educational opportunity. Before joining HGSE, he was the Matheson and Morgenthau Distinguished Professor at the University of Virginia School of Law.
