JLG moving inward for once, retreating in face of the weight of the world. Revealing just enough but with the right amount of tongue in cheek so we can never know for sure if he isn't just putting on a good performance for us. The images are incredible, but…

This brings me, finally, to JLG/JLG: Self-Portrait in December. It's daunting, obviously, to pick any one film to commemorate Godard's legacy with.
If you can put up with the brooding self-regard, which occasionally suggests German romanticism at its most narcissistic (imagine Goethe contemplating a bust of himself), this 1995 film shows Godard at his most accomplished, at least when it comes to composing in sound and image.
