Jun 17, 2022 · Motivated by the account of the murder in Burns’ book, two of Tunstall’s nephews traveled in April 1927 from England to Lincoln, New Mexico, to seek their uncle’s grave. They met with rancher George Coe and others still living in the Lincoln area who had known the late merchant and rancher.
John Henry Tunstall (6 March 1853 – 18 February 1878) was an English-born rancher and merchant in Lincoln County, New Mexico, United States. He competed with the Irish Catholic merchants, lawmen, and politicians who ran the town of Lincoln and the county.
John Tunstall was buried behind the Tunstall Store to the NE. The burial site is on private property, but there is a marker placed behind the Tunstall store in his honor. On the evening of February 17th, 1878, Tunstall arrived at his modest ranch after a disappointing trip to South Springs Ranch.
